BIO
Simon Barwick is an abstract artist working in oils and acrylics on large scale canvases. His paintings are informed by an intellectual rigour that interrogates the relationships between colour, tone and texture.
Barwick carefully modulates the viewer’s relationship with his paintings, so that what initially reads almost as negative space gradually begins to operate as perceptual field, allowing for a different, indirect, way of seeing. Interested in enacting simplification through minimalist reduction, he pushes one or another of painting’s formal components to its breaking point.
Counting Piet Mondrian, Agnes Martin and Gerhard Richter as his major influences, Barwick’s paintings work with bands of colour, often muted and always in balance with each other.
His works are in private collections in the UK, France, Australia, Canada and the US.
